Injured Student's Fall Causes Alcohol Statutes to Be Put in Place at UNT

At the University of North Texas, one student’s horrific tumble down a flight of stairs got the faculty’s attention, and they have taken pains to see that another incident like this does not happen again in the future. According to Dallas News, the student was at a fraternity and sorority part at UNT. She was intoxicated as she tried to navigate her way down a stairwell. The 20-year-old tripped due the lack of balance from inebriation, and she was seriously hurt. According to reports the young adult was taking part in a student rush event which involved alcohol. Because the student was underage, he should not have had to access to alcohol at all, yet the Delta Sigma Phi house was full of different alcoholic drinks as a part of the rush event.

IN response to the accident, UNT has determined that there is to be no alcohol at fraternity events for the school. If the faculty discovers that students have been violating this new statute, they can be punished accordingly. The new statute will most likely be added to the handbook and enforced by the security guards in the area. If you are injured falling down a flight of stairs or tripping because of intoxication, then you may be able to seek compensation. This is because as an underage student, there should be rules in place at your school that restrict you from being able to drink or have access to alcohol. If you have been injured in a similar situation like this one then you may want to hire a Dallas personal injury attorney to help you with your case. Contact someone at the Mathur Law Offices today to see if you have a legitimate case and to pursue compensation for your medical bills and sufferings!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun investigating Volkswagen vehicles after receiving reports of engine stalls and failures, sometimes at highway speeds. The agency said on its Web site that the engine stalls could be related to "high-pressure pumps failing and contaminating the fuel system with debris." There has been one reported accident related to the stalls and 160 complaints from Volkswagen owners. Angela Greiling Keane, Bloomberg 02/11/2011

Ford Motors announced last week a recall of more than 400,000 Windstar minivans in cold-weather states. The company said cold weather could cause bracket and mounts to separate from the vehicle's subframe. The recall covered van models sold between 1999 and 2003 in 22 states across the country. Staff Report, Detroit Free Press 01/28/2011

Toyota Motors has announced a repair program for more than 375,000 Prius hybrids to fix defects in the cars' cooling systems. The repair program, which the company insists is not a recall, affects cars from years 2004 to 2007. Toyota says the "water pump can let air bubbles into the cooling system, which can slow the circulation of coolant and allow excessive heat to build up," posing an overheating risk. Jonathan Welsh, WSJ Blogs 11/30/2010

The F.D.A. has announced a severe restriction of the diabetes drug Avandia, which can be linked to an estimated 47,000 people who suffered heart attacks while taking the drug between 1999 and 2009. The drug is banned in Europe, and patients in the U.S. can only be prescribed it if their doctor determines "they have tried every other diabetes medicine and that patients have been made aware of the drug's substantial risks." Questions were raised about the popular drug as early as 2007 after studies began to connect Avandia to heart problems. The decision marks a much harder line taken by government agencies on drug safety issues. Garniner Harris, The New York Times 09/23/2010

New details emerged Monday about Johnson & Johnson's efforts to buy up defective Motrin packages, the subject of a congressional investigation into whether the company sought to avoid a recall without the knowledge of the FDA. Staff at J&J's McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit messaged each other in the spring and summer of 2009 that they'd kept an FDA official informed about the use of a contractor to buy defective Motrin off store shelves, according to emails and letters reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

(UHI) and U-Haul Co. of Texas Inc. d/b/a U-Haul Co. of Dallas negligent and grossly negligent and East Texas Fork Enterprises Inc. d/b/a Jot 'Em Down negligent. The trial court reduced the exemplary damage award under chapter 41 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code. On appeal, the Dallas Court of Appeals concluded there was not clear and convincing evidence to support a gross negligence finding against UHI and reversed the $11.1 million punitive damage award against UHI.
